São Paulo – The Palestinian film Condom Lead is competing for the Palme d’Or in the short film category of the Cannes Film Festival, due from May 15 to 26 in France. It is the first Palestinian production ever nominated in this category. The information was released by Palestine’s news agency Wafa.
The 14 minute-long picture Condom Lead depicts the relationship between a man and a woman in times of war. The title is a satire of the name of the Israeli military operation in Gaza and 2008 and 2009, Cast Lead.
The movie is part of the Made in Palestine project and was directed by the twin brothers Mohammad and Ahmad Abu Nasser. “Is a story that could happen anywhere – anywhere there is, ever has been, or ever will be war; anywhere there is a man and a woman and a room,” said the directors in a press release.
“Instead of treating the conflict through the spectacle of death, however, Condom Lead takes a subtler, more enigmatic approach: it imagines war through the lens of marital lovemaking – or, rather, the lack thereof,” according to the press release.
Condom Lead is one out of nine films which are running for the Palme d’Or. It was shortlisted out of 3,500 productions from 132 countries.
