São Paulo – Brazilian football team Palmeiras descended on Doha, Qatar last Wednesday (3). They will play their first FIFA Club World Cup match there on Sunday (7) at 3 pm, BRT (9 pm, Doha time). The Brazilian team is drawing attention from the local press, which reported that Palmeiras beat Santos 1-0 for the Libertadores Cup final. Local newspaper The Peninsula said the “Brazilian giant” is in the country, and that players got tested for Covid-19 before heading on to the hotel.
Sunday will see Palmeiras will play at the Education City Stadium, one of two hosting Club World Cup matches. In the same venue, Mexico’s Tigres conquered South Korea’s Ulsan this Thursday (4) for the quarter finals, thereby qualifying for the semifinal match Against Palmeiras.
If it defeats Tigres, Palmeiras will play the final Club World Cup match on Thursday (11) at 3 pm, BRT (9 pm, Qatar time). Its opponent will be either Bayern München, of Germany, or Al Ahly, of Egypt, which are slated to play one another on Monday (8). The third-place match will take place at noon on Thursday.
On arriving in Doha, Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said: “We are delighted to be in Qatar for the Club World Cup. This is a very important tournament for all Palmeiras fans and we are looking forward to testing ourselves against some of the leading teams in the world,” The Peninsula reported.
