Brasília – The number of passenger arrivals at Brazilian airports in 2009 was the highest ever recorded by the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero). Domestic arrivals totalled 56 million from January to December. There was growth of 14.6% in comparison with the same period of 2008, and of 11.7% compared with 2007.
To the Brazilian minister of Tourism, Luiz Barretto, the figure is a result of investment in projects aimed at increasing the domestic travel market. "The figures for 2009 confirm the projections of the Ministry of Tourism and show that Brazilians are travelling more across the country," said Barretto.
The result in December was the second highest of the year, with 5.3 million arrivals. The month with the highest passenger throughput was October, with 5.4 million passengers.
