Rio de Janeiro – Petrobras announced, early this week, the discovery of a new light oil and gas field in Santos Basin. The commercial capacity of the area has already been informed to the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel Agency (ANP).
According to a press statement disclosed by Petrobras, the field is operated by the company (with a 63% share) in partnership with Repsol (with 37%). According to the Declaration of Commercial Viability, it is a reservoir located above the salt layer, in block BM-S-7.
The discovery was disclosed after the completion of exploratory well 6-SPS-53 on January 26th, 2009. Named Piracucá, the new field is located off the coast of São Paulo, 200 kilometres away from Santos, at a depth of 200 metres. The information shows that the volume of the reservoir is estimated at 88.5 million cubic metres (around 550 million barrels of oil equivalent – oil and gas).
According to the Petrobras press statement, the Declaration of Commercial Viability was issued in conformity with the Concession Agreement for Block BM-S-7 according to the term established in the Evaluation Plan submitted to the ANP, and it is the result of intense exploratory activity promoted by the consortium operating the block. "With the new field, it will be possible to increase the potential for light oil and gas production in shallow waters," finishes off the statement.
