Rio de Janeiro – This Tuesday (20th), the Brazilian oil company Petrobras announced a new oil discovery in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, an area which already comprises mega-fields such as Lula and Iara. The discovery was made in ultra-deep waters within the BM-S-8 block, during the drilling of a well 232 kilometres off the coast of the state of São Paulo.
Sampling tests proved that the oil is roughly 31 degrees API (a scale that measures density) and is therefore good quality. The well, which is still being drilled to determine how far the reservoir goes, is the third in the Bem-Te-Vi area.
The consortium exploring the area is controlled by Petrobras, with a 66% stake, in partnership with Petrogal Brasil (14%), Barra Energia do Brasil Petróleo e Gás (10%) and Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (10%).
