São Paulo – Until the 28th of this month, São Paulo residents can check out pictures by the Brazilian photographer Mauricio Lima, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his essay on refugees seeking asylum in European countries. Some of his work is now featured in Farida, a Syrian tale, now showing at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS).
In 2015, Lima made the rough journey to Europe alongside Middle East refugees, going through Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Sweden and Norway. He spent one to two weeks in each of these places.
The showing at MIS features 33 photographs. The exhibition title references a baby born in the city of Karlstad, Sweden, whose parentes had journeyed for over 50 days as they fled the war in Syria.
Lima is the only Brazilian ever to win a Pulitzer. An independent documentary photographer, he has worked in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Portugal. He currently focuses on photographing Middle East refugees, and his work is featured often in the United States newspaper The New York Times.
