São Paulo – Revenues of the Brazilian plastics industry increased by 35% in 2010 over the previous industry and reached 41 billion reals (US$ 25.3 billion), according to data supplied by the Brazilian Plastics Industry Association (Abiplast). In 2009, revenues reached 35 billion reals (US$ 21.6 billion). That is, revenues were US$ 6 billion greater last year.
According to the Abiplast, 5.9 billion tonnes of thermoplastic resins were processed. In 2009, 4.9 million tonnes were processed. There was a 20% increase.
Consumption of processed plastics reached 6.2 million tonnes in Brazil, a 20% increase over the previous year, driven mainly by the food, construction and packaging sectors. Imports have accounted for 10% of the consumed. Exports reached 310,000 tonnes.
