São Paulo – Port authority Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp) said this Friday (28) that the Port of Santos – the biggest in Brazil – handled record-high cargo volumes in August and year-to-date through August. Pictured above, the DP World Santos terminal.
Last month, terminals at the seaport saw a combined 12.5 million tons’ worth of goods, up 1.1% year-on-year. Outbound cargo slid 1.6%, while inbound cargo climbed 8.8%.
Codesp said soybeans and wood pulp drove the hike.
Year-to-date through August, the seaport handled 88.8 million tons, up 4% from a year ago, with outbound cargo climbing 2.2% and inbound cargo increasing by 8.5%.
In the first eight months of 2018, the hike in volume was driven by wood pulp and citrus juice shipments, although Codesp noted that container shipping and soybeans also played relevant parts in this.
The Port of Santos handled 387.800 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), up 14.6% from August 2017. Year-to-date through August, the facility saw 2.7 million TEU, an all-time high and up 11.1% from a year ago.
The seaport accounted for 24.3% of Brazil’s foreign trade from January to August, at USD 68.2 billion worth of cargo. China was the leading destination and source of goods.
