São Paulo – Activities on May 5th in Doha, the capital of Qatar, will celebrate the Day of Portuguese Language and Culture. The embassies of Brazil and Portugal will offer a luncheon with Brazilian and Portuguese food. On the 6th and 7th, Brazilian- and Portuguese-made films will be shown.
The date was set by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) as the official day to celebrate the culture and language of these countries. Brazil and Portugal are the only CPLP countries with embassies in Doha, the Brazilian embassy informed ANBA via email.
The plan is to bring the Brazilian and Portuguese communities in Qatar to get together for lunch at Brazilian food restaurant Ipanema, in the Marriott Marquis City Center Hotel. Fifteen food items will be served, including barbecue and desserts. There will be live attractions and surprises. Check the quick facts at the end of this article for prices.
The Katara Cultural Village (pictured above), one of Doha’s premier cultural centers will show a Portuguese movie on May 6th and a Brazilian one on May 7th. Details are still being worked out.
Both embassies are hosting events in close partnership lately, in a drive to promote their native language, in light of keen interest from the local public, according to the Embassy of Brazil. “Besides Qataris interested in learning the language, there is a numerous community of citizens from other Arab countries who have family ties in Brazil, and Indians from the Goa area,” the Embassy said. Goa is a Portuguese-speaking state in India.
Qatar’s Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) is also involved in the May 5th event. Reservations are available at a discount until April 26.
