São Paulo – Brazilian poultry exports yielded US$ 216.7 million in May, which represented a drop in 22.5% in relation to the same month last year. There were 196,400 tonnes of the product shipped, a reduction in 17.8% in comparison to the same period in 2005. The information is from the Brazilian Poultry Exporters Association (Abef).
According to the entity, the figures also reflect the retraction in imports by great consuming markets due to points of avian flu in Asia, Europe and Africa in the beginning of the year.
In the accumulated value for the first five months of the year, exports added up to US$ 1.23 billion, an increase in 0.93% in relation to the same period last year. Shipments, in turn, added up to 1 million tonnes, which represented a drop in 5.5% in comparison to the period from January to May 2005.
The greatest market for Brazilian poultry was Asia, which imported US$ 399.8 million in the first five months of the year. There were 321,500 tonnes shipped in the period. The second market was the Middle East, which imported 249,700 tonnes from January to May. The value added up to US$ 269 million in the same period. Next came the European Union, with imports worth US$ 253 million and 131,000 tonnes.
