São Paulo – Brazilian poultry export revenue dropped by 11% to USD 551 million year-on-year in April, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported this Wednesday (3).
Export volume was down 23% to 323,100 tons last month. The number includes all raw and processed chicken-based products.
A press release quoted ABPA president Francisco Turra as saying that one of the reasons for the decline is the fact that April last year had seen the second-best poultry export numbers on record, at 421,000 tons.
“A reduced number of business days also detracted from the final monthly result. Moreover, there was the impact on international sales of misleading publicity from the Federal Police’s bribery scheme probe Operação Carne Fraca, and markets that had banned imports of Brazilian product took a while to resume buying,” Turra said.
The industry had been posting upward numbers as the year progressed, but that changed when April was factored in. In the first four months of the year, 1.403 million tons of poultry were exported – 4% less than in April 2016. Revenue was still up 13% to USD 2.3 billion.
