Rio de Janeiro – Driven by oilfields in the Santos Basin pre-salt layer, oil production in Brazil increased for the third back-to-back year. The National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reported that output was up 3.2% to 2.5 million barrels per day (bpd) last year.
Pre-salt oil production averaged at 1 million bpd in 2016, up 33.1% from 2015.
Oil exports from Brazil reached 798,200 bpd, the highest level on record and up 8.3% from 2015. Higher domestic output led to a 44.9% drop in oil imports, to 178,600 bpd.
