Brasília – The Brazilian Forest Service has awarded this Tuesday (28th) concession contracts for four handling units within the Altamira National Forest, in the southwest of the state of Pará. Two companies will explore the 362,000 area, with an annual production potential of 200,000 cubic meters of legal, sustainable wood.
According to the Brazilian minister of environment, Izabella Teixeira, the Ministry is looking to allotting another 2 million hectares to tourism and biodiversity preservation. “Our goal is to increase the number of concessions and show that working in abeyance of the law is more advantageous than buying illegal wood, which is also conducive to tax evasion. It’s a vision shift, showing that oversight restrains illegal exploration and management and handling encourage what is legal,” she said.
