São Paulo – A public hearing to discuss the situation of Syrian and Palestinian refugees will take place this Thursday (24th), at 7:00 pm, at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, in the state capital São Paulo.
The meeting is coordinated by the representative Carlos Gianazzi (PSOL party). “We want to attract the Brazilian government’s attention to the situation of refugees. They need access to infrastructure and social welfare measures,” said Giannazi.
The representative believes it is important that the legalization process of refugees in Brazil to be made swifter, and that they be granted access to benefits that will help them earn their living in the country. “Brazil has signed an international refugee convention. In other countries, they have an assured minimum income, but not so in Brazil,” he said.
As per figures from the National Refugee Committee (Conare), linked to the Ministry of Justice, as of 2013, Brazil was home to 333 Syrian refugees. By the latest survey, the number had climbed to 538, and should increase by an additional 100 at the next update. Palestinians living as refugees in Brazil number 241.
The event will be attended by various refugee-supporting civil rights groups and will feature Arabic and English interpreters.
