São Paulo – The South American soccer confederation (CONMEBOL) made it official this Friday (4) that Qatar will be one of the national teams invited to Copa América 2019, to be held in Brazil between June and July of next year. Japan will also play the tournament as a guest.
In all, the tournament will have twelve teams: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, plus the two Asian guest nations. “The presence of both national teams aligns with the interest of the Asian Football Confederation in taking part in CONMEBOL’s competitions and the commitment of the South American Soccer Confederation in invest in the development of soccer worldwide,” said CONMEBOL in a statement.
Copa América is the world’s oldest international competition between national teams: the first edition took place in Argentina in June, 1916. The 2019 edition will be the fifth in Brazil, which held the tournament last time in 1989. The defending champion is Chile.
