São Paulo – Georgetown University Qatar has opened registrations for research projects on the topic Mobility, Displacement and Forced Migration in the Middle East. The projects selected will receive research grants of up to USD 25,000. The selection process is being managed by the university’s Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS). Registrations are open until September 15 to proposals from anywhere in the world.
The university will give priority to projects with original and empirically-grounded research on the topic. The projects awarded need to include a period of field research in one or more Middle East and North Africa countries. The length of the on-site research will vary with the needs of each project. The recipients of the grant also need to be available to travel to Doha to take part in work groups related to the research.
“Through this research project we are seeking to broaden our understanding of the complex population movements that are seen in the Middle East, and to include the movements of those who may be identified in multiple different ways – migrants, migrant workers, guest workers, temporary migrants, low and highly skilled economic migrants, trafficked persons, forced migrants/forced workers, smuggled persons, refugees and asylum seekers. Also included will be other migrants such as unaccompanied minors, environmental refugees and stranded migrants”, says the university’s website on the types of profile that will be studied.
The agreement for the research grants will be signed between the Georgetown University and the institution of the researcher awarded. Unaffiliated researchers can also apply for the grant. The money will be delivered through reimbursement of the expenses incurred during the research.
The projects will be analyzed by a university’s committee and researchers will be notified by email until November. The red tape procedures needed for the grant take six months, thus, researchers need to begin their field work around April 2017. The total period of the research can’t exceed one year.
