Brasília – A good part of fruit production on the banks of the São Francisco River is being threatened by continued rainfall. Mango, guava, grapes, papaya, passion fruit, tomato and beans are all at risk. It is estimated that losses could reach US$50 million.
The São Francisco River valley has become the principal export center for Brazilian fruit. In the Petrolina – Juazeiro region, on the border of the states of Pernambuco and Bahia, there are 5,000 fruit farms. The constant rains, which began at the beginning of December, is bad news all around. It is too wet to maintain control of growth cycles and too wet to halt the proliferation of funguses.
