São Paulo – Brazilian cinema will be in the spotlight in Palestine from late June to mid-July. Brazilian films will be screened for three weeks, every Wednesday, beginning on June 28, at AlKasaba Theatre & Cinematheque, in Ramallah. The first film to be screened will be The Cambridge Squatter, a documentary by Eliane Caffé.
Brazilian Film Nights is held by Filmlab Palestine, an organization that aims to boost the cinema culture in Palestine, and the Representative Office of Brazil in Ramallah. According to the Brazilian diplomatic office, the films will present to the Palestinian audience features of the Brazilian cinema and the diversity of its life, culture and society.
The first film to be screened tells the life story of a group of refugees who share an occupation with homeless people in inner-city São Paulo. The film shows the daily tension caused by the threat of eviction, as well as their daily dramas and different worldviews.
The Cambridge Squatter is a French-Spanish co-production. Among other accolades, it won an international jury’s honorable mention at the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Switzerland and was chosen as the best international feature film and Latin American feature film at the International Festival CineMigrante in Argentine in 2017.
Brazilian food will be offered on June 29 after the film. On July 6, Bach in Brazil will be screened, depicting the story of a German musician who teaches at a detention house in Brazil. On July 13, it will be The Movie of My Life, which brings the young protagonist Tony’s family conflicts and love relationships.
The films feature translation into Arabic and English. Screening begins at 7 pm. Ticket price is ILS 20 (USD 5.7).
