São Paulo – The United Nations (UN) secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, declared this Wednesday (30), in Geneva, that the Syrian refugee crisis calls for “an exponential increase in global solidarity”. He spoke in the opening of a conference on the need of countries to take in refugees. “We are here in response to the largest crisis of refugees and displaced people of our time”, said Ban Ki-moon. “This demands an exponential increase in global solidarity”.
According to him, at least 480,000 Syrians, that is, 10% of the refugees and displaced people that left Syrian due to the conflict need to find a country for admission in the next three years. “Neighboring countries have shown exceptional hospitality”, said the secretary general. He reminded that Lebanon took in more than 1 million Syrians, Turkey had 2.7 million and Jordan received 600,000.
