São Paulo – Just like the Olympic Games, the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games will feature a delegation of refugee athletes. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said this Friday (26) that one Syrian and one Iranian have been confirmed in the contest, slated for September 7 to 18.
The Syrian athlete is Ibrahim Al-Hussein, who will compete in the S10 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle swimming events – S10 is a classification based on disability levels. He lost the lower part of his right leg after a bomb went off. He sought asylum in Turkey and then in Greece.
Iran’s Shahrad Nasajpour will compete in the F37 discus. Nasajpour has cerebral palsy and lives in the United States.
