São Paulo – Registration for the 10th Dubai International Award for Best Practices is now open. The organization awards projects that make a significant contribution for improving the living environment through human and urban development, and is promoted by the city of Dubai and the United Nations Agency for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat).
The contest is open for public, private and academic institutions, non-government organizations, communications vehicles and natural persons. Applications are open until March 31, according to the information on the United Nations website. The award considers the sustainability of the competing project, the positive impact on society, involvement of various people, as well as innovation, proved gender equality and accessibility.
Twelve submissions from around the world are awarded as winners. The chosen projects will receive, at a ceremony in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, a money prize, a certificate and trophy. There will be six winners for Best Practices, two for Best Practices Transfer, two for University Research, one for Private Sector and one Personal Award. The last two are only awarded trophies and certificates.
The first edition of the award took place in 1996. The imitative was created during a United Nations international conference, in Dubai, in 1995, when representatives from 95 countries got together to discuss positive environmental impact practices. The contest is held every two years.
In the last edition, winners were from Burkina Faso, Kenya, Lebanon, Cambodia, Emirates, China, Spain, Portugal, Brazil and Uruguay. The winning project from Brazil was entered by the City Hall of Extrema, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, with a scheme for water preservation. With the program, the city financially rewards rural producers who consider environment preservation a priority in their activities. Projects from Brazil have also won in other editions.
