São Paulo – The government of the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul was given an Award by the United Nations (UN) last month in Manama, Bahrain, for its popular and participation system. The UN Public Service Award granted awards in different categories to projects in 28 countries, and was accepted by the winners at a meeting in Bahrain on June 27th.
The Rio Grande do Sul state government uses several popular participation strategies in its administration, such as discussing budgets at meetings with the population both onsite and online. The method was devised through an overview of the state’s experiences in the past 14 years. The participative budget described below is a flagship project of state governor Tarso Genro (PT – Brazilian Workers Party).
