São Paulo – The non-governmental organization (NGO) Espaço Cultural Diálogos do Sul (“Dialogues of the South Cultural Space”), based in the city of Rio de Janeiro, is going to promote the course "Mundo árabe-islâmico ontem e hoje" (Arab-Islamic world past and present), from the 10th to the 26th this month, at Centro do Rio de Janeiro. The classes are geared at graduate and postgraduate students, businessmen, teachers and those interested in Islamism. Enrolments are open until Friday (6th).
The aim of the course is to offer students an overview of the history of Islam and of the countries that adopted the religion. According to information supplied by the organization, the classes are going to contribute for the Brazilian public opinion to have a more accurate view of these Muslim countries, which are in constant conflict.
The themes to the approached in the lessons are the origins of Islam, such as Mohammad, the first Khalifas, the Koran, the pillars of Islam and the importance of the Arabic language for the consolidation of Islamic culture; the golden age of Arab-Islamic civilization; the Crusades; Islamic theology; the disintegration of the empire; the influence of Arab-Islamic civilization on Western civilization; the Turkish-Ottoman empire; colonial institutions; Eastern culture; the Independence Wars, political movements and ideologies in the Arab-Islamic world, with an emphasis on the Middle East.
The course is also going to present case studies on the Palestinian issue, on Iraq, Afghanistan, globalization, oil, geopolitics, the Islam in the media and September 11th. The classes will be administered by professors Beatriz Bissio, sociologist, journalist and holder of a doctorate in History, and Juliana Johann, holder of a master’s degree in Foreign Relations.
Espaço Cultural Diálogos do Sul aims to promote and hold cultural actions that will contribute to the development of human potential and for greater interaction between populations, within the context of integration in Latin America and the remaining Southern countries.
