Rio de Janeiro – The director of the Information Centre of the United Nations in Rio de Janeiro (Unic Rio), Giancarlo Summa, informed on Friday (11) that of the 193 member countries of the United Nations (UN), 183 have already confirmed presence in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).
Summa, who participated in a debate with media professionals about the Rio+20, on Friday, in Rio de Janeiro, added that 135 presidents, vice presidents or prime ministers of these nations enrolled to address the public during the meeting.
Also present in the debate, the executive secretary of the National Commission for the Rio+20, ambassador Luiz Alberto Figueiredo classified the number of participants as “expressive”, mainly if compared to those who participated in the Rio 92, little over 100.
"There is great national interest, the theme is truly fundamental. Countries that are in debt may not be present, but those that are growing, developing much, are coming,” he said. Expectations, according to the UN, are for journalists from several parts of the world to cover the Rio+20, which should bring together thousands of participants from several sectors of the civil society in Rio de Janeiro on June 20th, 21st and 22nd.
