São Paulo – This week, the Brazilian government submitted to the National Congress a free-trade agreement between Mercosur and Egypt, signed during the South American bloc’s summit in San Juan, Argentina, in August 2010. The agreement must be ratified by the parliaments of all countries involved before it becomes effective.
The text of the agreement was forwarded to the Legislative branch by means of a message from president Dilma Rousseff. The measure was published last Wednesday (22nd) on the Official Gazette, two weeks after the Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi paid a visit to Brazil.
The agreement’s ratification was one of the matters discussed by Dilma and Morsi during the visit. On the occasion, the Brazilian president said the treaty “will create opportunities for increasingly diverse [commercial] exchange.”
