São Paulo – Rio de Janeiro theater company Cia Teatro Voador Não Identificado is currently in São Paulo staging its adaptation of Arabic literature classic One Thousand and One Nights. The script combines Scheherazade’s tales and the life stories of Arab refugees in Brazil. The play has been showing since July 3 at SESC Avenida Paulista. Tickets are available here.
The play can last as long as 180 minutes, and each staging is different. On any given night, Scheherazade will tell three stories from the original book, interspersed with modern-day accounts by Arab refugees. The only recurring bit is the prologue, where the princess tricks the king into forestalling her own death. The Arab refugee stories have been taken from interviews and are played by the actors. Mention is made of the Arab Spring and Brazil’s current scenario. Here’s another ANBA story on the play.
The play was created and directed by Leandro Romano, and the script is from Gabriela Giffoni and Luiz Antonio Ribeiro. In the cast are Adassa Martins, Bernardo Marinho, Clarisse Zarvos, Elsa Romero, Gabriel Vaz, João Rodrigo Ostrower, Julia Bernat, Larissa Siqueira, Pedro Henrique Müller and Romulo Galvão. Tickets go from BRL 9-30 (USD 2-8). Age rating is 16 and older.
