São Paulo – The influence of Arabic on the Portuguese language will be the subject of a webinar next Tuesday (5). Promoted by Brazil’s Representative Office in Ramallah, Palestine, the discussion will take place at 3:00 pm EEST (9:00 am BRT). Participation in the seminar is free of charge, and it will be broadcast on YouTube with simultaneous interpretation from Arabic into Portuguese and vice versa.
The event will have four lectures. Professor João Baptista Vargens, head of the Arabic Studies department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and author of the book “Léxico português de origem árabe” [“Portuguese Lexicon of Arabic Origin,” in free translation] will speak about the theme of his work. Professor António Lázaro, from the University of Minho in Portugal, a historian specializing in contact with the Arab world, will address the legacy and presence of the Arabic language and culture in Portugal.
The counselor of the Brazilian Embassy in Oman, Claudia Assaf, will address professional experiences in diplomacy and language teaching. Another lecture will be about promoting cultural exchange between Arab and Portuguese-speaking countries and the Brazilian publishing house Tabla, which focuses on authors from the Middle East and North Africa. Ambassador Qais Shqair, head of the Arab League Mission to Brazil, and Laura di Pietro, director of Tabla, will speak.
The seminar will be presented and moderated by the Marketing & Communications vice president of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), Silvia Antibas. Participating in the opening of the event will be ambassador Márcia Loureiro, president of the Alexandre Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG); ambassador Osmar Chohfi, president of the ABCC; the ambassador of Brazil to Palestine, Alessandro Candeas; and the ambassador of Palestine to Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben.
The event has the support of the ABCC, the Representation Office of Portugal in Ramallah, the Group for International Cooperation of Brazilian Universities (GCUB), publishing house Tabla, FUNAG, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Brazilian Federal Government.
