Rio de Janeiro – The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) issued this Friday (9) its Monthly Survey of Services containing numbers from June. Activity was down 1% from May, in the sharpest drop to date this year. Services were down 3.6% year-on-year in June.
The sector had seen 0.4% growth in April and May combined, but that growth was offset by the slump in June.
So far this year, services have grown by 0.6%, a slightly weaker rate than that of the second half of 2018, during which the sector had picked up by 0.8%. Growth was 0.7% in the 12 months through June.
The IBGE said the 1% drop in services happened in all five activities surveyed. Information and communication took the biggest hit, at -2.6%. the sector had grown by 3.2% in April and May combined.
Transportation and postal services were down 1%, other services were down 2.3%, professional and administrative services were down 0.1%, and services rendered to households were down 0.2%.
