Rio de Janeiro – Services sector activity in Brazil fell 5% in January from January 2015. According to the monthly services survey Pesquisa Mensal de Serviços (PMS), issued by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Friday (11th), this was the 10th straight decline in activity and the rate of decline was equal to the one in December 2015 from December 2014. Activity shrank 3.7% in the 12 months through January.
All five major services subsectors saw activity drop in January, with the sharpest declines being in professional, administrative and complementary services (-9.1%), and transportation, auxiliary transportation and postal services (-5.8%).
“Services rendered to families” dropped 4.1%. The mildest decline was seen in information and communication (-2.1%). “Other services” shrank 7.9%.
Nominal revenues (non-adjusted for inflation) dropped 0.1% in January. In the 12 months through January, revenues climbed 1.1%.
