São Paulo – The Brazilian Social Service for Trade (Sesc, in the Portuguese acronym) offers Portuguese language courses to refugees at the Sesc Carmo unit, in central São Paulo. The classes are free of charge and are offered via an agreement between Sesc, the National Commercial Apprenticeship System (Senac), the Caritas of the Archdiocese of São Paulo and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Unhcr).
Four groups are formed each year. The course in basic Portuguese lasts two months. Each class comprises approximately 20 students, who are selected by the Caritas. The next classes will begin in April and July.
Only refugees admitted by Caritas are eligible to attend.
