Rio de janeiro – A higher number of chickens slaughtered in Q1 this year in Brazil than in Q1 2014. As per the Quarterly Animal Slaughter Survey released this Thursday (24th) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IGBE), 1.38 billion chickens were slaughtered, up 2.1%.
The total weight of chickens slaughtered in Q1 was 3.16 million tons, up 2.6% from Q1 2014. In Q1 this year from Q4 2014, however, both the amount of chickens slaughtered and their total weight declined, by 1.9% and 0.6%, respectively.
The IBGE’s survey also covers eggs production and purchase of milk by processing companies. A total of 730.16 million dozen eggs were produced in Q1 this year, the highest output since records started being kept in 1987.
Q1 production was up 1.6% from Q4 2014, and up 6.2% from Q1 2014. São Paulo was the leading producing state, accounting for 32.1% of total national output.
Conversely, milk purchases for processing declined by 6.2% from Q4 and 1% from Q1 2014, to 6.13 billion liters. Minas Gerais remains the leading state in milk purchases.
Cattle slaughter was down 7.7% from Q1 2014 to 7.73 million heads of cattle, and down 9.3% from Q4 2014.
The total weight of cattle slaughtered was 1.84 million tons, down 10.8% from Q4 and 5.9% from Q1 2014. Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo remained the top-ranking states in cattle slaughter.
