São Paulo – Somalia, an Arab African country, took over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 2026. Somalia is a non-permanent member, elected in June 2024 for the 2025–2026 term. The council’s main responsibility is maintaining international peace and security.
The UN Security Council presidency rotates among member states for one-month terms. In the first half of 2026, besides Somalia, another Arab country, Bahrain, will preside in April. The United Kingdom will hold the presidency in February, the United States in March, China in May, and Colombia in June.
