São Paulo – Somalia’s government announced this Thursday (28) a change in the country’s electoral model that establishes the representation of women and minority groups in Congress. Therefore, in the next elections, which are expected to happen in September, 30% of the seats will be occupied by women. The information was published by the United Nations News Centre.
According to the UN, the change is the result of almost six months of consultations made with regional administration, members of the parliament and the Somali civil society. In a statement, Ban Ki-moon, UN’s secretary general, said that the decision is a sign of Somalia’s progress in peace- and state-building.
