São Paulo – Brazilian Foreign Relations minister Celso Amorim gave one more step towards the Summit between Arab and South American heads of state, forecasted for December, in Brazil. During his visit to Jordan, during the World Economic Forum, the minister and League of Arab States secretary general Amr Mussa, defined details of the summit preparatory ministerial meeting, to take place in parallel with the United Nations (UN) General Assembly meeting, in September.
Secretary general Mussa informed Amorim that the other countries that are members of the League showed great satisfaction with the Brazilian initiative of bringing both regions closer together. Amorim was discussing the subject with his peers in Arab nations around a week ago, in Cairo, during a League of Arab Nations summit.
During his address at panel "Facing the Real Challenges," Amorim defended the involvement of countries like South Africa, India, and Brazil, and not only of the foursome United States, European Union, United Nations, and Russia, in the resolution of the conflicts in the Middle East.
Amorim also mentioned the efforts president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been making to improve commercial relations between developing countries, and touched on the Summit.
The League of Arab States secretary general, who also participated in the panel, in turn stressed the Arab country disposition to begin a structured process of cooperation with South America.
