São Paulo – Syria is going to promote, late this month, an international conference on infrastructure projects in the country. The meeting, called Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Conference – Financing Infrastructure in Syria, should take place between October 30th and November 1st, in Damascus, the Syrian capital. The seminar should present investment opportunities in Syria and possible partnerships between the public and the private sector.
Syria is elaborating, under the leadership of prime minister Naji Otri, a new investment law in the area of PPPs, according to figures disclosed by the organizers of the event. At the conference, four sectors that need investment in the country, and in which there may be PPPs, should be presented. They are oil and natural gas, electric energy, low-income housing and transportation.
Each of these sectors should be discussed in talks at the conference, and the Syrian ministers of the respective portfolios should be present. There should also be detailing of regulation of PPPs in Syria, the risk that this kind of business entails and the international experience in this kind of investment should also be promoted.
The conference should include, among those discussing the projects, representatives of the Ministry of Finance of Egypt, the World Bank and the Syrian Sana investment bank, among others. Also speaking should be several Syrian authorities, like the minister of Finance, Mohammed Hussein, the minister of transportation, Yarob Badr, the minister of Housing, Omar Ghalawanji, and the minister of Oil and Mineral Resources, Sufian Allao.
At the meeting, the organisers expect the presence of international investors. The invitation to the conference was sent to the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, which forwarded it to around 60 companies and sector organisations in the country. Registration for participation may be done on the conference site. The meeting is organized by the British Syrian Society, at the request of the government, and takes place at the Umayyad Congress Palace.
