São Paulo – Syria’s olive oil production for 2022 is estimated at 125,000 tonnes, according to information released by SANA, the country’s official news agency. The volume represents an 8.69% increase compared to last years, which reached 115,000 tonnes, according to data from the International Olive Council (IOC).
Also according to the council, Syria accounts for 3.8% of global olive oil production. In terms of consumption, Syrians account for 2.8% of the total. The European Union, the United States, and Australia are the main markets purchasing olive oil from Syria.
SANA pointed to the Syrian farmers as a symbol of resilience and recalled olive trees are spread across Syria and adorn the mountains, valleys, and plains, heralding a bountiful olive harvest.
With some of the best olive oils in the world, Syria has unique quality standards. According to SANA, one of the strategies used by Syrian farmers to comply with these regulations is to wait for the ripe time to harvest. The country usually has rainfall at the beginning of the harvest, in late September, which can contribute to higher oil quality, according to the agency.
