São Paulo – More than half the schools managed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Syria are closed, according to information released on the United Nations website. Approximately 45,000 Palestinian chidlren living as refugees in Syria are affected by the problem.
“Whether because of damage to buildings or because of the overall insecurity, nearly two thirds of our students in Syria will not be able to return to their schools this fall,” said UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness.
The agency maintains 118 schools in Syria, of which only 49 will be reopened in the 2013-2014 school year. The UNRWA is working on alternatives, like distance learning and TV lessons.
