São Paulo – Officials from Syria’s Ministry of Agriculture and the World Bank held a videoconference to discuss a plan for reviving Syrian agriculture. Syrian state news agency SANA reported that the main topic of the discussion was a support program addressing the priorities of Syrian agriculture.
The discussions covered plans to revive pistachio production and the infrastructure for olive oil production, including olive planting areas and fruit processing facilities. Challenges faced by the livestock sector were also addressed and are expected to be included in the future recovery plan.
The meeting also included Isabelle Liou, World Bank officer responsible for the agricultural sector in Syria and Lebanon, and Syria’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Bassel al-Suwaidan. He said the sector requires broad recovery, as well as the introduction of technologies to enable efficient water use. Liou, in turn, said studies are underway to identify the strengths and weaknesses of Syrian agriculture, as well as to analyze its potential and the basic inputs needed for the sector, which is considered strategic for Syria’s recovery.
