São Paulo – The United Nations (UN) undersecretary general for Humanitarian Affairs, Stephen O’Brien, said in a press release this Monday (21st) that Syria’s neighbor countries are overwhelmed by the refugee influx and are in need of more financial aid.
During a visit to Jordan, he claimed that the countries in the region have been tasked with disproportionate burden, since they are sheltering the vast majority of people fleeing conflict in Syria, which broke out in 2011.
According to the UN, out of the US$ 7.4 billion required for humanitarian actions across Syria and neighboring nations this year, only 38% have actually been disbursed. “I thank those who have already stepped up, but I must now urge each and everyone in the international community to do more to support Jordan and other countries in the region and increase their support for the crucial humanitarian response,” O’Brien said in the press release.
