Brazil’s president officially launched the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty this Monday (18) during the G20 Summit. Arab signatory nations include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, and Tunisia.

Saudi Arabia’s minister of Finance, Mohammed Al-Jadaan, praised Brazil’s agenda execution. He has joined the G20 Summit in Rio alongside the Saudi foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, who is attending the event on behalf of crown prince and prime minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira attended a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh on Monday (9). According to the ministry, political dialogue and economic relations with the bloc are priorities in President Lula’s foreign policy.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, attended a meeting with her Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira on the UAE-Mercosur agreement being negotiated and Brazil’s hosting of COP30. Al Hashimy is participating in the G20 meetings, where she argued for addressing inequalities.

In talks with Brazil’s foreign affairs minister in Rio, where the G20 meeting is taking place, Saudi Arabia’s Economy and Planning Minister Faisal bin Fadel Alibrahim said his country will fully engage in the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty to be launched by President Lula on Wednesday (24).

The group of major world economies is having a week of activities in Rio de Janeiro from Monday (22) through Friday (26). High-level meetings on finance and development will be held, along with the pre-launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

During event in São Paulo, Egypt’s Minister of Finance called for efforts in social protection, while UAE’s Minister of State for Financial Affairs spoke of financial inclusion. Brazil’s Fernando Haddad wants more international cooperation so that the rich “contribute their fair share in taxes.”
