Year to date through November 2021, the Brazilian retail trade sales stepped up 1.9%. Increased sales in hypermarkets, supermarkets, foodstuff, beverages and tobacco contributed to the results.
Revenues from sales in the sector accounted for 7.5% of Brazil’s GDP. The country has over 91,000 supermarkets.
While large supermarket chains grew amid the pandemic, small businesses such as candy stores closed during the times of restriction. In countries with fast vaccination programs, smaller retailers like these have reopened and invested.
Trading volume grew in four areas of the segment, including supermarkets.
Growth was below the expected by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (ABRAS). For 2019, the expectation is a 3% increase.
An index from think tank FGV which tracks business owner outlook climbed 5.7 points in December from November of this year.
