São Paulo – The paintings of a Brazilian artist are hanging from walls in Saudi households. Tânia Paupitz sells her art in fairs and exhibitions in the state of Santa Catarina, and among her buyers there already were Saudi tourists. Sales were made when Tânia participated in the Ilha Shopping Summer Fair, held at the shopping centre of the same name, in Florianópolis, the capital of the state, from 2004 to 2006.
Tânia’s paintings are present in eight different countries, among them the United States, Italy and France, as well as Saudi Arabia. The artist’s collection includes depictions of landscapes and daily life in Florianópolis and in European cities. More recently, she started doing more abstract work. She actually uses a combination of the abstract and academic styles.
She started painting images of her native city, Florianópolis, early in her career, and they have already become Tânia’s trademark. About halfway through the 1990s, after having made several foreign trips, particularly to the United States and Europe, she also started painting the cities that she would visit while travelling. She would either take photographs or buy postcards and then make re-readings.
Presently, however, Tânia is investing in the creation of images, and to that extent she wound up using a bit of abstract features. But she still travels. The painter has not been to any Arab country yet, but she wants to. Morocco is one of the most coveted, for its tradition in the world of arts. "I am curious about the country. I could bring something interesting from Morocco to paint," says the artist.
Tânia, aged 54, comes from a family of artists. Her mother, brother and paternal grandmother are involved in art. She entered this universe at 18 years of age, when her family encouraged her to take painting lessons with a private teacher. That was how she began painting and occasionally selling her work. The hobby became a profession in 1991, when she opened an atelier, Armazém da Arte ("Art Warehouse"), in Florianópolis.
In addition to teaching painting lessons in her atelier, she also maintains a gallery for visitation and sales. Her paintings have prices ranging from 250 reals (US$ 115) to 1,800 reals (US$ 824). Tânia also participates in fairs and exhibitions, and sells her paintings in several Brazilian states, such as São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, besides her own state, Santa Catarina.
