São Paulo – The theatrical play Incêndios (Fires), starred by actress Marieta Severo, is set to open at São Paulo’s Teatro Faap (Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado) on September 19th. It tells the story of Nawal, a Middle Eastern woman who experiences war, the quest for a lost son, and exile in the West. The play was written by the Lebanese-Canadian Wajdi Mouawad, one of the best known playwrights in the world today.
Fires was created in collaboration by Mouawad and the French company Au carré de l’hipotenusa. It has been staged in over 15 countries – the author has also directed it –, and was met with audience and critical acclaim everywhere. The main character dies, leaving a will assigning a mission to her twin son and daughter who live in the West: finding their father and brother who have stayed back in Lebanon.
The Brazilian version of the play is directed by Aderbal Freire-Filho and aside from Marieta Severo, it features the project’s creator Felipe de Carolis, Keli Freitas, Marcio Vito, Kelzy Ecard, Julio Machado, Isaac Bernat and Fabianna de Mello e Souza. The play has won several prizes, including the 2013 Shell Prize for Best Directing and the 2013 APTR Prize for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Set Design and Best Play.
In Brazil, the play has been staged in Rio de Janeiro (in the namesake state), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) and Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul). It premiered in Rio, in the second half last year, and returned to the city this year due to its box office success. Ticket prices in São Paulo are yet to be announced.
The season at Teatro Faap will extend from September 19th to December 14th. The theatre is located in the Higienópolis district and the play will be staged on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
