Brasília – Brazilian tourists may now bring items for personal use from abroad without paying taxes. Bill 440, published on the Official Gazette this Monday (2nd), signed by the minister of Finance, Guido Mantega, provides for such. The bill also eliminates the need to declare the temporary leave of previously imported goods.
Under the new rules, travellers are allowed to bring new or used goods, for personal consumption or as gifts, which “for their quantity, nature or variety, do not suggest import or export for commercial or industrial purposes.”
Personal use or consumption goods, such as clothing and hygiene products, are included. Photographic cameras and cellular phones are also allowed, however video cameras and personal computers are excluded.
Travellers may bring a maximum or 12 litres of alcoholic beverage, ten cigarette packs with 20 units each, 25 units of cigars or cigarillos and 250 grams of tobacco. The Federal Revenue has cleared taxes on the purchase of up to 20 units of small gifts costing under US$ 10, provided that the number of identical items does not exceed ten.
