Rio de Janeiro – The sales volume of Brazilian retail improved 0.1% from May to June. The increase follows a 0.9% drop from April to May of this year. The data, taken from the Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC), was released today (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Despite the increase, retail volume registered a decline in the quarter moving average (-0.2%) from this year’s June over the same month in the previous year (-5.3%), year-to-date (-7%) and year-to-year (-6.7%).
The small improvement of 0.1% from May to June was driven by three of eight activities surveyed by the IBGE: textiles, clothing and footwear (0.7%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%) and other personal or household articles (0.8%).
Among the five activities to decline, office, computer and communication equipment and material (-3.6%) registered the sharpest drop. The other activities decreased as follow: fuels and lubricants (-0.1%), supermarkets, foodstuff, beverages and tobacco (-0.4%), furniture and household appliances (-0.1%) and pharmaceuticals, medical and toiletries (-0.2%).
