São Paulo – Tunisia is reopening its borders to foreign travelers on June 27. The National Anti-Coronavirus Committee convened this Wednesday (10) in La Kasbah to discuss necessary measures leading up to the reopening, Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported, in a meeting chaired by prime minister Elyes Fakhfakh. The Ministry of Health said no new cases were reported on Wednesday (10). So far, 989 patients have recovered, and 49 patients are still under care. According to the Ministry, there have been 49 deaths from coronavirus in Tunisia.
The Committee discussed prevention measures to ensure successful completion of the last leg in the country’s phased exit from the lockdown. The curfew ended on Monday (8), and the lockdown is expected to be lifted on June 15.
The meeting saw the Committee assess the evolution of the pandemic and the progress made thus far with the nationwide lockdown strategy. The government believes Tunisia has reached an advanced stage of control over the pandemic. TAP reported that over 20 provinces have seen zero cases in the last 40 days.
#ReadyAndSafe campaign
The reopening date predates the season that sees tourists and expatriates flock to Tunisia. In a bid to publicize this feat, Tunisia’s tourism bureau Discover Tunisia created the #ReadyAndSafe campaign. Tourism and Handicrafts minister Mohamed Ali Toumi explained in a video how Tunisia tackled the pandemic and what lies ahead.
Another video (see below) outlines the rules for hotels, restaurants and other tourist-related establishments. Measures include anti-crowding restrictions, temperature control prior to admission anywhere, disinfection of hotel rooms three hours prior to guest arrival, etc.
