Tunis – Tunisia’s tourism industry saw TND 1.293 billion (USD 492.2 million) in the first half of 2018, up 46.1% from a year ago, the local government reported this Thursday (5). The country welcomed 3.23 million tourists, up 26%, Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported.
The numbers were a result of the resumption of tourist flows from traditional sources. Tourist numbers from France, Germany and Algeria climbed 50%, 61% and 18.7%, for instance.
Total inbound tourists from relatively new sources also increased, including Russia (48%) and China (55%).
Hotel stays climbed by 57% year-on-year in the first half.
Tunisia’s government said the results reflect the success of a safety policy put in place after the terrorist attacks in Tunis and Sousse in 2015.
Authorities expect the country to see 8 million tourists this year.
