São Paulo – The Tunisian Oussama Mellouli won the men’s 10-kilometre swimming marathon at the London Olympics, in the lake in Hyde Park. He won the gold medal after completing the race in 1h48m55s, just ahead of the German Thomaz Lurz, who took silver, and the Canadian Richard Weinberger, the bronze medallist.
The other Tunisian medal these Olympics was won by the same swimmer last week. He got a bronze medal in the 1,500 metres freestyle. Four years ago, in Beijing, Mellouli won the race.
Among the Arabs, the only other gold medallist in these games, up to now, is Algerian runner Taoufik Makhloufi, who won the 1,500 metros running race on Tuesday (7). In the same race, the Moroccan Abdalaati Iguider won the bronze medal, the only Moroccan medal up to now in this edition of the games.
Up to Friday, Egypt had won two silver medals, the first last week, by Alaaeldin Abouelkassem, in fencing, and the second on Monday (6), with Karam Mohamed Gaber Ebrahim, in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Qatar won two bronze medals, one in high jump, with Mutaz Essa Barshim, and one in sports shooting, in the “skeet” modality, with Nasser Al-Attiya, the driver who won the Dakar 2011 rally.
Closing the list of medals for the Arab countries comes Saudi Arabia, with a bronze medal in equestrian show jumping and the Kuwait Fehaid Aldeehani won the bronze medal in the men’s trap event.
