São Paulo – Approximately 1 million Somalis are plagued by lack of food, according to information from the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP). Spokesperson Elizabeth Byers told UN Radio this Friday that there are now less people in food crisis in Somalia than in August 2011, when there were 3.7 million, and in 2012, when there were 2.1 million.
People in food crisis situation are those who are unable to feed properly, are malnourished, or must sell their possessions to buy food. In addition to conflicts between rival factions, Somalia faces the consequences of a drought that hit the country in 2011.
“We need to support these 1 million people because it’s so fragile, they might lose all the gain if we don’t keep the effort and if we don’t monitor the situation,” said Byers.
