São Paulo – The United Nations launched the 2025 Global Humanitarian Overview, requesting donations of USD 47.4 billion to aid 189.5 million people in need worldwide. As of November this year, the UN had raised only 43% of the total USD 50 billion appeal to cover the needs for 2024, according to information released by the organization.
The UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Tom Fletcher, said the world is facing a combination of crises. “The most vulnerable are the ones who suffer the most from the impact of multiple conflicts and the most brutal crises, which have an average duration of 10 years,” he said.
Speaking to the press, Fletcher described the situations in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine as dramatic. According to the under-secretary-general, in areas already marked by the consequences of poverty and inequality, the combination of war and the climate crisis increases the fear of interruptions in aid efforts to the most vulnerable. There are currently 123 million forcibly displaced people worldwide due to reasons such as conflicts.
Switzerland, Kuwait, and Kenya
The launch of the 2025 Global Humanitarian Overview took place in the cities of Geneva, Switzerland, Kuwait City, Kuwait, and Nairobi, Kenya, with the aim of raising awareness about the need to ensure access to aid. The UN calls for greater respect and understanding of the laws of war and international humanitarian law by combatants, in order to protect civilians and aid teams.
